Maintaining Your Plumbing in the Winter

​These plumbing tips help keep your plumbing in good shape during the cold months:


Keep a Drip:
Especially when the temperature dips below freezing, allow faucets that are connected to vulnerable pipes (such as those that run along exterior walls) to drip slowly. This can help prevent your pipes from freezing up.
 
Insulate:
Insulate pipes and faucets that are exposed to unheated areas such as basements, attics and outdoors. For pipes we recommend using pipe insulation or heating tape to prevent freezing. For outdoor faucets we recommend wrapping them with insulated covers to protect them from freezing.
 
Maintain Consistent Temperatures:
Keeping your thermostat at a consistent temperature can help prevent drastic temperature drops that can lead to frozen pipes.
 
Service Your Water Heater:
Having your water heater serviced regularly ensures it’s functioning efficiently and is more reliable during the colder months.

Know the Location of Your Water Valve:
In case a major problem arises, you should know where your home’s main water valve is. If a pipe bursts due to cold temperatures, you can quickly turn off the water to prevent extensive damage and to wait until the problem can be fixed. The main water valve is normally located directly next to the water meter. To keep your main water valve working properly, service it by opening and closing it once each year.

Install a Sump Pump:
If your home is prone to flooding due to melting snow or ice, consider installing a sump pump to remove excess water.


Travel Tips:
If you plan to take any trips away from home during the winter months, ensure to keep your thermostat set to a minimum temperature to prevent freezing. You can ask trusted neighbors or family friends to check on your home periodically.
